BALANCE / IMBALANCE![]() Shoham Art Gallery, Tel Aviv Curator: Doron Polak What is that balance which makes up our lives? A philosophical query or practical wondering that accompanies our every creative act? Night or day, health or illness, truth or falsehood, beauty or ugliness, ‘to be or not to be’ a myriad open questions that beg examination, research, deconstructing that ‘state of balance’. The question of being within or without the given framework – rejection or acceptance of its rules – marks a specific strategic objective for the confrontation of every single artist. The mobiles – colorful kinetic art sculptures enable each of the artists to produce a work resonating his/her own personal research, representing a three-dimensional symbol that reflects the complexity of their individual dialogue. Imbalance versus balance in life is a source of narrative inspiration for the varied works of the artists in the exhibition. Poet Paul Celan in his work “death fuge” invokes issues of action and survival that confront the rejection of absurd situations of life under oppression, war and the loss of hope. Characteristic of his work is a balanced rhythm, a perspective that offers distance, an enclave of balanced sanity from which one may relate to what is there even under impossible circumstances. Hope and optimism emerge as balance is found. According to Schopenhauer, many of the obsessive thoughts about life and philosophical theories about humanity are rooted in what he calls “hormonal imbalance”. Balance / Imbalance affect every move and eventuality of our existence. Doron Polak, Curator |
