Track of Life
11.2009- Track of Life Artura Gallery, Noga locality, Tel Aviv-Jaffo Curator: Doron Polak The use of existing objects that are ready made, representing conventional symbols and usages, guide the direction of Tami Cohen's new exhibition, at the Artura Studio in Jaffo, into an open, abstract dialogue between the observer and her creations. Pieces of wood taken from mechanized systems, horizontal or round shapes, a sort of impression of non-functional objects that exist in the wide, open spaces of our lives, hint at the modern inspiration of urban architectural structures that remind us of ancient monuments or temples. A passage from piece to piece in the exhibition can serve as a dreamy tour among timeless, dateless tools, a mystic ceremony, like those based on past cultures of faith, where man's identification with the cosmic wheel of creation might somewhat explain the meaning of human existence. Most of the parts exhibited are taken from depositories of spare parts for trains and tracks, that can, in themselves, be interpreted as a strong criticism, or as a reference to the yearning and longing of the artist to such familiar and conventional motifs in the history of art. It is particularly significant to point out the sculptures that resemble ladders leading one upwards into the sky, the balanced objects that in an abstract fashion seem to resemble the human body, the pieces that look like Bible parchment and holy objects. Tami Cohen creates new objects with dimensions that point to intelligence and emotion as one, blending actual consciousness with a system of existing associations in the various pockets of our soul. The compositions making up the exhibition connect between philosophical, abstract meanings and the artist's personal interpretations, as she sails and wanders in the open, boundless regions of her imagination. The voyage towards infinity, towards heights of observation in the depths of the souls of random humankind, systems of interaction between tiny, inconsequential man and the bureaucratic institutions of violence and the inexplicable – all these and more provide her with inspiration to grant points of reference to the observer. Visitors to the exhibition are invited by Tami to join a dramatic journey full of refreshing challenges on the train of her interpretations and memories, which move swiftly down the tracks of her life.
